Chapter 1

Introduction:

Five Polio survivors set out on a mission to find information onf Post Polio Suyndrome (PPS), what its effects are, and some strategies and resources that can help other Polio survivors and the medical profession to deal with the symptoms.



Chapter 2


Doctors:

Lyn sees Dr. Stephen de Graaff, a neurologist and rehabilitation specialist, for on going treatment for pain in her arms, shoulders and fatigue. He explains the severity of the initial polio infection, overuse of non affected areas, and pain management.



Chapter 3


Physiotherapy:

Tricia sees Cathy White – Physiotherapist at Polio Services Victoria, for exercises to manage muscle weakness and pain associated with post polio syndrome. Cathy explains exercise physiology and balance to conserve energy.



Chapter 4


Orthotics:

Karim sees Darren Pereira an Orthotist at Polio Services for leg support to stabilise his knee. Karim had never received assistance for his disability.



Chapter 5


Occupational Therapy:

Pauline sees Margaret Petkoff – Occupational Therapist at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, to better manage around her home with minor alterations. Margaret explains how to manage personal needs and access problems.



Chapter 6


Respiratory Assistance:

Mary needs nocturnal ventilation and gets help from Anne Duncan, Clinical Nurse Consultant / Victorian Respiratory Support Service Outreach Co-ordinator working at the Austin Hospital Melbourne.



Chapter 7


Speech Therapy:

Beth has problems with swallowing and speech. Sue Wilson, Speech Therapist at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, explains ways of helping loss of speech due to fatigue and weak throat muscles, swallowing and eating difficulties - assessing sounds, volume, structure of mouth, moving x-ray and specific therapy.



Chapter 8


Dr Bruno’s 10 Commandments:

Dr. Richard Bruno is the Director of Post Polio Institute and International Centre for Post-Polio Education and Research at Englewood (NJ) Hospital and Medical Center in the USA. Dr Bruno is also author of The Polio Paradox and discusses 10 simple commandments for better management of post polio syndrome.



Chapter 9


Stategies & Resoruces:

Brian Catchpole from Tadvic shows how making simple things for cars can be effective for mobility. The Independent Living Centre has a wide range of products suitable for all disabled people.

Dr. Stephen De Graaff, neurologist and rehabilitation specialist, gives a comprehensive explanation of the difference between post polio syndrome and the late affects of polio, covering fatigue, weakness, overuse of healthy limbs and joints, and a balance of light activities to relieve and manage pain.
